KAWANA SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

December 2018

QMF was awarded the concrete works contract by Monodelphous to upgrade the Kawana Sewage Treatment Plant in the township of Warana, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

The plant was first built 35 years ago and currently treats about 20 million litres of sewage per day. The upgrade is a major step to address future population growth in the area, taking the current treatment capacity of the plant from about 90,000 people to 200,000 people. The plant currently services communities from the southern end of its catchment at Pelican Waters through to Buddina and the upgrade will mean sewage from South Buderim, Chancellor Park and Sippy Downs, which is currently treated at Maroochydore STP, will be sent to Kawana STP.

Scope of works on this project included but was not limited to:

  • Flow distribution tank

  • Chlorine contact tank structure

  • Chlorine contact tank concrete pad

  • Chlorine contact tank new discharge weir

  • Grit removal structure

Other aspects of the project included working within a tight construction program, access constraints, working at heights, working with conventional and engineered formwork systems to deliver a detailed product.

Works completed December 2018
